Did you know that over 800 pharmacies permanently closed in England between 2015 and 2022? With only 130 new pharmacies opening in the same period, we know that’s a real inconvenience for rural pharmacy patients like you.

Bearing the burden

Our rural communities already face accessibility challenges, over and above disproportionate closure rates. Across Bath and NE Somerset there are only 18 pharmacies per 100,000 people and a recent accessibility study highlights a stark ‘distance decay’ in accessing healthcare services in rural areas. Approximately 98% of England’s urban population is 20 minutes’ walk to a pharmacy, whereas in rural areas this drops dramatically to 19%.  

But it’s not just the ‘distance decay’ affecting accessibility; there’s a substantial rise in partial and full-day closures whereby a pharmacy may close with limited or no notice. For our rural communities this means the abrupt halt of pharmacy services and direct access to medication and consultation services. At a personal level this means a wasted journey to the pharmacy, not being able to obtain essential medication and increased costs associated with multiple pharmacy trips.
