In the next instalment of our Meet the Team series, we speak to Lucy Drennan, Social Media Manager at Phlo. Lucy tells us more about her role, what she enjoys most about working at Phlo and what can be challenging in putting out medical information online.

Tell us a bit about your background and previous roles before joining Phlo

In my early 20’s I suddenly found myself interested in health and looking after my wellbeing, and so I decided to study Nutrition which I did in both Edinburgh and Dublin. I found this new passion of mine and worked in the industry in Ireland for a few years before moving back to my home city of Edinburgh. I then started helping other practitioners with their marketing, social media and getting set up as a business as I had experience of doing this myself. I loved doing this and it ignited my passion for marketing and social media. Additionally, the pandemic at the time was fuelling more and more businesses to move online.

What attracted you to work for Phlo?

I was sent the Social Media job advert for Phlo on LinkedIn by my brother-in-law and immediately saw the potential for growth and scaling the business from what I saw on the social media accounts at the time. I loved the combination of being able to put my nutrition and wellbeing knowledge into this role along with my social media and marketing skills and it seemed like a perfect match. Phlo’s values as a company and employee benefits also meant a lot to me and I was eager to be a part of the team.

What does your role entail and what does a typical day look like for you?

My role mostly consists of planning and putting content together for all our social media pages for both Phlo Digital Pharmacy and Phlo Connect. This could be writing a health blog, social media post, putting together our monthly newsletter or creating a video on social media. A lot of my day is organising and directing with the wider team any text and copy, graphics that are required, gathering images, managing external guests or influencers that are involved with us and liaising with the wider team on information for example, the designers, engineers or pharmacy.

A typical day would include a marketing team meeting in the morning to lay out the tasks for the day, moving onto some content planning and writing, then working with the designers on graphics and images, and I will usually have some calls throughout the week with some of the teams such as engineering or pharmacy.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love creating content so working in an environment which produces a lot of content is my forte and there’s a lot of freedom in the creation which is a huge bonus. Our marketing team are a very creative bunch and always coming up with new ideas for campaigns, content and posts so I enjoy working with the graphic designers to create new assets.

I also really enjoy writing and would typically write one or two blogs a month for our blog page on the website. With my background in nutrition, a lot of the health and nutrition blogs have been written by me which then get approved by one of our pharmacists.

What are the most challenging aspects of your role?

As every bit of information we put out online can be seen by anyone, it’s important for me to provide informative and valuable content around healthcare. This means that all the health content we produce has to be clinically accurate, as well as engaging. Thankfully, everything we produce here gets reviewed by our amazing pharmacy team. We also liase with the patient care and pharmacy team on common patient concerns and queries which helps us to better understand what type of valuable content to create for our patients and prospective patients.

What makes Phlo different and why should people join us?

Phlo is passionate about serving our patients the best possible experience to ensure that getting medication isn’t a hassle or inconvenience. I was amazed at how frequently we get 5-star Trustpilot reviews and it really makes you feel like you are working on something worthwhile which could change our patients' lives.

My first couple of weeks at Phlo were very welcoming and supportive as I eased into the role. Working with members of the other teams, everyone is friendly, approachable and always willing to help which makes your day that little bit better.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m currently 6 months pregnant, so with a baby on the way, most of my time right now is getting organised and ready for that but otherwise I love travelling and being outdoors either doing something adventurous or something simple like going for a bike ride. The best thing I’ve done to date has to be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania which took 4 days to get to the top! Those memories will stay with me forever.
